Raising a Civilized Son in India: A Growing Challenge

India, known for its diversity and cultural richness, is now grappling with a crisis in social and moral values. Rising aggression on the streets, pervasive sexual violence, and increasing intolerance toward minorities are tearing apart the social fabric. In this environment, raising a civilized and responsible son has become a significant challenge. The idea of a civilized son goes beyond mere morality; it encompasses an individual who embodies compassion, tolerance, and equality.

Growing Aggression and Violence

Aggression and violence have become commonplace on Indian streets. From traffic disputes to minor arguments, situations often escalate to physical altercations and even bloodshed. This environment of hostility not only creates insecurity in society but also leaves a deep impression on children. Children learn from their surroundings, and when they witness aggression from parents or elders, they tend to adopt similar behaviors. To curb public violence, strict laws and societal awareness are essential.

Sexual Violence and Early Misguidance

Sexual violence remains a grave issue in India, rooted in gender inequality and patriarchal mindsets. Teaching children gender sensitivity is crucial to nurturing a civilized son. Parents must instill in their sons the importance of respecting women as equals with the right to dignity. Schools and families should emphasize gender equality and sex education during early learning stages.

However, rising cases of sexual offenses among adolescents point to a lack of parental supervision, exposure to inappropriate content, and the absence of proper guidance. Unchecked access to the internet and social media leads young minds astray, resulting in actions that can ruin their future. Introducing comprehensive sex education in the curriculum and enforcing stricter laws to regulate adult content online is imperative. The government must also encourage manufacturers to create child-friendly mobile devices equipped with filters to block inappropriate content.

Intolerance and Social Division

A significant section of Indian society believes that minorities are taking away jobs and opportunities. This perception fuels social division and sows seeds of intolerance in the minds of the next generation. Children must be taught that every religion, caste, and community contributes to society. Parents and educators should emphasize the value of diversity, highlighting how India’s strength lies in its unity amid differences. Exposing children to role models who promote equality and harmony can help foster positive attitudes.

The Role of Parents and Negligence

Parents are a child’s first teachers. However, many parents today fail to give their children the attention they need due to busy schedules or indifference. This negligence often leads children astray. Instances of minors driving vehicles without licenses, breaking traffic rules, and endangering lives have become alarmingly frequent. Parents must supervise their children closely and teach them the importance of responsibility and discipline.

Moreover, parents should lead by example, demonstrating the values they wish to see in their children. Regular communication, understanding their problems, and helping them discern right from wrong are essential. Striking a balance between discipline and freedom in upbringing ensures that children grow into responsible individuals. Parents can inspire their children by sharing stories, books, and films that highlight the importance of compassion, courage, and equality.

The Role of Education and Media

India’s education system must play a pivotal role in shaping responsible citizens. Value-based education, including lessons on ethics, equality, and social responsibility, should be integrated into the curriculum. Schools should organize activities that teach teamwork, tolerance, and leadership. Additionally, discussions and initiatives to address social issues should be encouraged at both school and college levels.

Media, especially television, cinema, and social media, significantly influence children today. While these platforms have the potential to support children’s moral, social, and mental development, they often do the opposite by exposing them to inappropriate content. Unregulated use of social media leads to time wastage, mental stress, insecurity, and negative thoughts among children.

Government and Community Responsibilities

The government must take strict measures to regulate children’s use of mobile phones and the internet. Drawing inspiration from Australia, India should establish an age limit for mobile phone usage and enforce strict regulations in schools. Special mobile devices for children, with blocked access to adult content and limited social media features, should be introduced. Social media platforms must implement robust systems to filter content and limit screen time for young users.

Raising awareness among parents about monitoring their children’s digital activities is equally crucial. Community initiatives can further support this by promoting the responsible use of technology.

Conclusion

Ensuring a bright and secure future for children requires collective efforts from the government, society, educators, and parents. Encouraging positive use of technology and shielding children from its negative impacts is a shared responsibility. While raising a civilized son in a diverse country like India is undoubtedly challenging, it is not impossible. Through concerted efforts, we can nurture a generation that embodies compassion, tolerance, and responsibility. A civilized son is not just the pride of a family but the foundation of a civilized society.
