Major ED Action in Chhattisgarh: Raids at Former CM Bhupesh Baghel and His Son’s Residences

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted early morning raids on Monday at 14 locations, including the Padumnagar residence of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and his son Chaitanya Baghel in Bhilai. Reports suggest that a significant amount of cash has been recovered, prompting ED officials to bring in cash counting machines. The exact amount seized has not yet been disclosed, but sources indicate that it could be in the multi-crore range.

Liquor Scam and Mahadev Betting App Connection

The ED’s action is linked to the ongoing investigation into money laundering related to the liquor scam and the Mahadev Betting App scandal. Several former state officials, businessmen, and political figures are suspected of involvement in these cases.

The agency believes that thousands of crores were embezzled in the Chhattisgarh liquor scam between 2022-23, with a portion of the illicit funds allegedly being used for political financing and personal investments.

The Mahadev Betting App case is another major concern, where some influential individuals in the state are suspected of facilitating illegal online gambling transactions. The ED suspects that a significant amount of money was laundered through hawala networks within India and abroad.

Congress Workers Protest, Term Action as “Political Vendetta”

Following the ED raids, Congress workers staged strong protests outside Bhupesh Baghel’s residence. Large crowds of party workers gathered, raising slogans against the ED and accusing the central government of misusing investigation agencies to target opposition leaders. The ED’s action has triggered a political storm in Chhattisgarh, with leaders from both Congress and BJP making strong statements.

Former CM Bhupesh Baghel called the raids “political vendetta”, stating:
“Every time elections approach or the opposition gains strength, the BJP uses ED and CBI as weapons. My family and I are being deliberately targeted, but I will not be intimidated.”

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai responded, saying:
“If they have done nothing wrong, why are they afraid? The ED is an independent agency doing its job. Corruption must be exposed, and the guilty must face justice.”

A senior Congress leader questioned the timing of the raids, stating:
“The BJP government is weaponizing central agencies to weaken the opposition. If corruption is the issue, why are BJP leaders involved in various scams never investigated?”

Meanwhile, a prominent BJP leader hit back, saying:
“Congress leaders are now trying to act innocent, but the truth is that corruption peaked in Chhattisgarh over the past few years. This action was necessary.”

Political analysts suggest that these raids might also be linked to internal power struggles within Chhattisgarh Congress and the fight for the state party leadership. Several Congress leaders are vying for influence within the party, and the ED action is being seen as a move that could alter the internal power dynamics.
